General Bali Information
Electricity
127/230 voltage AC (50 Hz) is used. Type C sockets and plugs are standard in Bali.
Etiquette
Since the left hand is considered unclean, use only the right hand when eating, receiving food and when shaking hands. Touching someone’s head is considered disrespectful and requires an immediate apology; and you should never enter a Hindu temple wearing revealing clothing or without removing your shoes.
Languages
Bahasa Indonesian (official language) together with Balinese are the most widely spoken, English is commonly spoken at hotels, restaurants and major tourist sites.
Mobile Phones
You can use your mobile telephone in Bali if your phone company offers international roaming in Indonesia; however these rates can often been outrageous. Alternatively you could purchase a prepaid SIM card which you insert into your mobile phone. Make sure that your mobile phone is both unlocked and able to take a SIM card.
Religion
About 90% of Bali's population follows Balinese Hinduism, unlike the rest of the Indonesian population, which is predominately Muslim.
Telephone
To call Australia direct from Indonesia, dial 001 plus 61 followed by the telephone number without the ‘0’. If making calls within the same area code, dial the telephone number directly. For other calls within Indonesia, dial the area code beginning with ‘0’ followed by the telephone number.
Time Zone
Bali, Lombok and the islands of East & West Nusa Tenggara are on Central Indonesian Time (Waktu Indonesia Tengah), which are two hours behind Australian Eastern Standard time, or eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. For example, when it’s noon in Bali, it is 2pm in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne.
Tipping
It is not necessary to tip in most mid-ange hotels and restaurants, as they add a service charge to your bill known as ‘plus plus’. It is appropriate to tip if someone has provided service which was exceptional.
Water
Never drink tap water, avoid ice and juices which have been watered down, bottled water with an intact seal is generally safe, boiling water is the most effective purifying method.
